Arrived in perfect condition, with a plastic wrapper to avoid damage. A beautiful book filled with illustrations by 20 different artists, plus lots of info about witches from all over the world. I love how each artist talks you through their style choices, showing their process from preliminary sketches to the finished drawing. Highly recommend.

This book is extremely well put together, which I've come to expect as standard in anything that 3dtotal produce. Twenty witches designed by twenty different artists, so there is a lot of different techniques and styles on show in this book. Each artist talks you through their thought process, gives background and history about each type of witch and shows you everything from their rough sketches through to their final masterpiece. Highly recommended!

Oggi parliamo di "The Field Guide to Witches: An Artist Grimoire of 20 Witches and their Worlds", curato da Marisa Lewis, una bellissima guida illustrata ad opera di 30 talentuosissimi artisti come Olga Adri'enko, Abigail Larson, Emanuel Pantaleon, Franco Gonzalez e tanti altri. Edito da 3D Total Publishing, uscito qualche giorno fa."In storie sparse in tutto il modno, le streghe compaiono come forze del bene, del male o misteriosamente volubili. Alcune sono celebrate nelle feste da ballo delle divinità, altre esiliate ai margini della società."Il libro è una guida illustrata monotematica che si divide in 3 sezioni: Streghe delle fiabe; Dee e guardiane; Megere, perfide e mostri.Nella prima sezione ci imbattiamo in Baba Yaga, la più famosa fattucchiera russa, incontriamo i piccoli aiutanti della Befana, conosciamo le ricette della strega nella casetta di marzapane, scopriamo i segreti della magia del sangue della strega del mare, etc.Nella seconda sezione, invece, troviamo la maga Circe, Iside, Freya, Morrigan, Ecate e tutte le divinità tradizionalmente legate alla stregoneria.L'ultimo gruppo di streghe è rappresentato poi dalle streghe più oscure, misteriose e mostruose provenienti da diverse culture, come la Black Annis inglese, la Bruxa messicana o la Yama-huba giapponese."Possiamo dedurre che i poteri della strega del mare siano collegati ai corpi celesti in qualche modo, forse alle stagioni o ad altri aspetti del mondo naturale."Cari lettori, sono giunto a conoscenza di questa guida grazie a un'illustratrice che seguo su Instagram e che ha fatto parte di questa raccolta. Sto parlando di Abigail Larson, di cui vi ho già parlato nella recensione di "Cautionary Tales" di Ridley Pearson da lei illustrato.Il libro è una guida straordinaria che farà letteralmente impazzire i fanatici delle illustrazioni. Ciascuna strega è disegnata in modo unico, in uno stile differente e studiata nei minimi dettagli. Gli illustratori dedicano delle pagine anche all'ideazione delle fattucchiere e in quei punti impariamo tanto anche sulla mitologia dietro di esse. Le scelte degli autori sono chiaramente descritte e pienamente giustificate. Si vede che c'è stato uno studio approfondito per ognuna."Sarebbe interessante dare a ciascuna strega tre dita per rappresentare la natura tripartita delle sorelle."Il libro non è solo una meraviglia per chi ama i disegni, ma anche per coloro che sono appassionati di mitologia, folklore, letteratura e stregoneria. Ci sono numerosi riferimenti alle diverse opere o leggende dove le streghe sono protagoniste.Questo porta il vantaggio sia di procurare una ricca bibliografia se si desidera approfondire che di scoprire qualcosa chenon sapevate ancora su di loro.Tra le cose che ho amato di più ci sono sicuramente le deduzioni degli illustratori per cui hanno deciso di ritrarre un personaggio in un modo piuttosto che in un altro. Sono assolutamente condivisibili e potrebbero plasmare definitivamente nelle vostri menti l'immagine di questa o quell'altra strega in un certo modo.
