We recently built an extension and had to install a booster pump to pressurise the water in the house. We also have a well and a cold water tank in the attic. All went well till our older daughters came home after being away and found that they would use al the water whilst having showers from the cold tank till the booster pump ran dry. It would cut out but then it would also air-lock. So we had a larger cold tank installed but due to space limitations it still would likely run empty. We wired in this float switch so that when the level in the water tank went low, it would stop the electrical supply to the pump, thus preventing it from running dry and air-locking. When the water level would rise in the tank, electric power would be restored. It does not fully stop the water to the house, the downstairs showers and taps will still work on gravity, just the water supply to upstairs would be affected as there is no head of pressure from the cold tank to the upstairs area so it's not like you'd be trying to cook and then have no water!
