Concerto For Orchestra

Excellent performance and audiophile pressing on SACD format of popular composer.

Like other posters here, I have long considered Reiner's classic recording with the Chicago Symphony a hallmark for for Bartok's MSPC and Concerto for Orchestra. But Malkki's performances with the Helsinki PO are at least equally engaging, and the high-res digital recording sets new standards for balancing color with detail and (especially) bringing out the microdynamics -- the expressive nudges, accents and momentary warmings that indicate the presence of human beings. Nice to have the 5.1 immersive mix too. It provides a realistic room ambience, never seems overdone.

I've known both of these works for decades and this is the most exciting recording since the original Reiner.

Now my go to recording for these two masterpieces. Superbly engineered and performed.

Ignore the 3 star rating; performance and sound are outstanding. I have many recordings of these works, including Reiner's, and this is one of the best I've heard in years. Rated 10/10 by Classics Today.
