this bag looks great but it is heavy, not ergonomic, hard to use as a backpack, and packs sofullthat it should have wheels as a carry on

Thule makes some very good looking travel bags. I was originally looking at the Thule Aion 28L backpack but then saw this one Thule Subterra 2 and went with it.The Thule Subterra 2 has features I was looking for, like being able to hide the backpack straps and to carry the bag over the shoulders. The bag stands up by itself and when you sit it down and is very compact and portableI just used this bag for a 3 day flight and packed it to the gills and was still able to fit it in the overhead storage on my flight .There's a few things that hold this bag back from being a top performer. Firstly none of zippers are lockable. Secondly the compartment that holds the laptop sleeve has no closure. So when you open the bag, if there is something in that compartment it will fall out.The top outside pocket shares it's back with the main compartment. Stuffing one causes you to lose space in the other. There are also no compression straps on the Inside. The Thule Subterra 2 is a good travel bag with shortcomings that stop it from being a great bag. Everyone packs according to their own needs and this bag is likely good for short trips where you dont need to bring too much.

The build quality is really nice, like the bag generally. However, there are some specific functional choices that are baffling and idiotic and undermine the bags usefulness.Top Compartment Isn't Full ZipSo, this bag is basically a travel suitcase that can be a backpack. Assumption here should be it's a SUITCASE people carry on their backs, and they'll use it like a SUITCASE on trips. However, the top, larger section is where you'd put clothes only opens 25% of the bag length, meaning it's like a kids book bag. This is ridiculous. The worst part is there is NO REASON for this... the seam where the zippers for that section end have no impediments to being 3/4 length. They just decided not to make the top unfold fully.Electronics Sleeve id DeficientSo, they include a laptop sleeve with this thing. Why? Because they don't include enough padding and protection in that section, and you need the sleeve to keep your laptop from getting destroyed. First, more padding should be in this section, specifically on the back side. The other issue with the laptop section is that it has just one giant sleeve and one giant mesh pocket. What about a second laptop? What about an iPad? Why not split the mesh pocket in half so your charger and maybe some headphones are sloshing around all over the place? And why isn't there a velcro strap for holding in the laptop?Like, this bag started as a good idea, but it was designed by someone who doesn't understand the audience and their needs and it's grossly deficient in a variety of key areas. Great build quality, but there are better options at this price point.
