I purchased this calculator to replace my very ancient Sharp EL-545H as a backup calculator that I keep at the bottom of my messenger back. It has almost exactly the same functionality.Unfortunately, while almost all basic scientific calculators of this size are solar or dual powered, including other Sharp calculators, this one uses only batteries. Given the small size and the very low power consumption of modern electronics, I expect them to last for years, but when they do run out, I won't have a solar cell to back me up until I replace the battery. The Casio fx-260, which is almost identical to this one, does have solar power, so I recommend that one over this Sharp.But aside from the lack of a solar cell, this is a top notch basic scientific calculator. If you're unfamiliar with the terminology, an advanced scientific calculator will offer solvers, calculus, matrix & vector operations, and usually multivariate statistics. A basic scientific calculator, like this Sharp EL-501, will lack those advanced features (and cost significantly less, and sometimes be much smaller).
