If you have a D800 and the Nikon battery pack that goes with it, you can put in a big battery designed for a D4 if you i) have the battery and ii) fit this battery cover on it. This gives you much more shooting per charge, means that you only have to take one charger with you if you also shoot D4, and gives you access to a higher frame rate in DX mode.In this sense, the BL-5 does exactly what it is supposed to do, and without fuss or difficulty. It takes seconds to swap it, meaning you can cannibalise your D800 or your D4 when in battery difficulties.At the same time, before you actually buy this, you just need to add up what you are letting yourself in for.The price of the may seem reasonable enough. After all, it's a powerful battery (though not as powerful as the old D3 batteries, apparently for legal reasons), and it stays charged a very long time when not in use. You can get a third party battery cheaper if you want, and are prepared to risk it.However, add to that the ruinous cost of the , for which there is no third party equivalent, and you are now into more than £400 for the battery and charger, in addition to the money you spent on the battery grip.I'm not complaining about this -- I added up the cost, and went for this kit.
