Narex chisels are not the best on the market, but, for the money, they're pretty good value. This one is nicely put together and plenty solid enough to take a sound beating when clearing out a mortice, but the bevel wasn't flat and had a few milling marks that needed to be ground off to make it sharp.I have never owned any other brands of mortise chisels - preferring to cut mortices with a bench chisel - so feel free to put this down to a lack of experience, but it doesn't keep an edge for as long as I'd expect. However, having said this, it's quick and easy to get a sharp edge and it's great to lean on when clearingwaste so maybe it's just me?

The chisel is wonderfully machined, and well balanced. It's also quite long, one of the longest in my collection, the handle is really massive and can take a whack. For beginners - you might not cut mortises from the start, but the chisel's bevel is really long - about 25 mm (1") so it's an amazing chisel to practice hand sharpening on, you just can't miss the angle, and can get the muscle memory. For hobbyists - yes, you can cut a mortise with a bench chisel, but unless you're Paul Sellers and cut dozens of them every day, this chisel makes it so much easier! I've cut couple of practice mortises, and I never got the walls this clean and parallel as with this chisel! The back of the chisel is amazingly flat!! - I've polished about 7-8 cm (3"), there's no hollow or bump anywhere. At first I was surprised by the lines on the back from machining, and thought these will be tough to remove - but these are actually left there on purpose, extremely shallow, intended as a guide for you to see how much of the back got flat - nice idea! Also the steel is a great balance of hardness - it not too hard to be brittle or tough to sharpen - it takes the edge very fast and well, and it's not too soft to get dull fast - I've cut 5 mortises in a row, and it was still going smoothly. Even if you do get a small bend on the edge (happened to me when cutting too close to a knot), few passes on the honing stone will straighten this in a second, and you can go on.Will definitely order other sizes when needed.

I am very satisfied. This is a steel mortice chisel with wood handle, which is proving solid and practical. For my usage it is doing a good job. Much better at mortising than a standard chisel!!!
