Bradt Chile: The Carretera Austral: a Guide to One of the World's Most Scenic Road Trips

It’s a great resource if you’re planning on traveling the Carretera, and one of the only in-depth guides available in English. I referenced it a lot while planning and while traveling. Note that some things have changed since the second edition was released - there are at least a couple new gas stations available, more sections of road are paved, a few roadside stops on public land are no longer accessible, etc, but that’s just the nature of a hard-copy guidebook.

Auch wenn Tipps zu Unterkünften schnell veralten - in zwei Fällen habe ich gute Hostals gefunden, damit hat sich der Preis schon amortisiert, kleiner Nebeneffekt.

This is by far one of the best guide books entirely dedicated to the Carretera Austral and detours. Covers locations, history, cultural background, how to get around (foot, bike, bus, car, etc.) where to eat and stay...really quite complete. It doesn't really cover hiking trails so you have to look to more specialized guidebooks for that.
