I have played many many etude books so If you are a trumpet player and you want to reach a lot of levels this book is your baby. I was blessed to study this with Mel Broiles and it is a rare combination of beauty, technical skill, and overall virtuoisity. There are 36 in this book and maybe only 2 or 3 "dogs" . I just bought the 4th copy of this as one was stolen and the others were inherited and VERY old. Get a good teacher and maybe some recordings ?

It has been over 40 years since I worked through this book studying trumpet in college. I had long-ago lost my Charlier, but every time I saw one in a music store somewhere, it was $80 or more. This is an exact duplication of the Charlier etudes I had in college. It hasn't gotten any less challenging, and I have set a goal to perfect (that is a subjective term) each etude in the book this time around. If you have played all along or if you are a "comeback" player, Charlier is for you. Everything you want to work on in honing your musical skills is in this book. What I have learned is that now that I am in my 60's, as opposed to when I was in my late teens-early 20's, I am a much more "musical" player. Making Charlier a part of my daily practice has helped me to express that musicality. Research is now showing that people in my age group can continue to make physical and cognitive progress. In other words, that Charlier etude that gave you fits in college? Give it a try again. You might be surprised!
