The shape of the washer is important for proper chain operation - I tried to run my saw in a pinch with a fender washer and it didn't work well at all. These are a wear part - once they get chewed up by a chain, you start grinding the edge off of the clutch sprocket, eventually having to replace it too.Good to keep a pack of these on hand so you can keep your saw running.
